A Trend I See: More Acceptance

Another TREND I have noted is how people from many traditions and cultures are becoming aware of other mores and they are more accepting of different lifestyles. Have you noticed that many extended families include someone who comes from another culture or speaks another first language? Recently a couple in my family said their marriage vows in two languages-Spanish and English. They had music and dances of both cultures throughout the rehearsal dinner, the wedding ceremony, and the reception.

This same extended family also includes two females who are co-parenting a girl and a boy. Both parents are responsible, caring adults raising these now young adults. The girl has become a nurse and the boy is in college.  Family religious beliefs range from Buddhist to agnostic. This family is accepting of their differences.

Although many families are not accepting of differences, I see a shift to accepting differences in most areas. One couple of gay partners who have no children are not accepted as partners by their Christian families even though the gays are responsible,

caring, and religious.

Media may lead one to believe that there is an increase in hate and prejudice, but on a personal level, I see a trend toward more acceptance of differences. Look around you...what do you see?

Absolutely agree with you! We live in a very global society today. The more exposure we have to

different ethnic groups and alternative life styles, the more we realize how much more we human beings have in common. Kindness, accountability, working to achieve goals, and having loving relationships are not "owned" by one ethnic group over another. We do have a long way to go before Martin Luther King's "I have a dream speech" becomes the norm, but many families today (including mine) have beloved members from different ethnic origins, skin color, religious or non religious beliefs, and sexual oriention. The one thing all have in common is how terrific each one is! Kudos to your blended family! 😊
